2020 has been a rough year for data security. The rapid transition from in-office to remote work environments increases attack opportunities for cybercriminals, and they’ve taken full advantage of the situation. Panda Security reports that the cyberthreat landscape has increased significantly due to COVID-19, and ReedSmith says that scams have increased by 400 percent. Phishing rates have risen to 80 percent of employees, and the likelihood that they click the links went up 15 percent according to a Get App report.

Risk-Based Security found that publicly reported data breach numbers reached 2,935 in Q1-Q3 2020, with 36 billion records involved. The largest breach of 2020 is SolarWinds, which is a security vendor for federal government agencies and Fortune 500 companies. Cybercriminals executed a manual supply chain attack that compromised updates for SolarWinds' network management tool. The U.S. Treasury and Commerce Departments were impacted, and it's likely many other organizations and federal agencies were as well. CISA directed federal agencies to fully disconnect from this tool to limit the damage potential of this breach.

The top data security tools for 2021 aim to protect distributed workforces, cloud and hybrid environments, and critical infrastructure amid a chaotic and stressful pandemic. We chose these solutions based on their G2 review ratings, suitability in adapting the data security needs of 2021, and customer reviews.
