Getting started with Facebook Ads and Salesforce

Q: Why did Xplenty build the Facebook Ads and Salesforce integrations?

A: Let’s look first at the Facebook Ads integration. Today, social media data is extremely important, with over 56% of adults using one or more social media platforms on a regular basis. For this reason, it’s one of the most effective ways for companies to reach their consumers and get their message heard.

That said, many companies can’t accurately measure how effective their social media campaigns are because their social media data is often isolated from other business-critical sources and it doesn’t add context to the overall business.

By integrating this data with other relevant data - such as website traffic, web signup and marketing - businesses can have a better understanding of how their social media campaigns are performing. That’s why we built the Facebook Ads integration.

The same concept is true for the Salesforce integration as well. CRM’s are very powerful tools, but they are only as good as the data they contain and there’s a lot of data that needs to be accessed and shared between departments for businesses to make full use of it. This integration makes sure that that happens so every department is on the same page and working effectively.

Integration Specifics: Sources and API

Q: What kind of API do you use to write to Salesforce?

A: The Salesforce API that we are using to write into Salesforce is using the bulk API.

Q: The demonstration shows Facebook to Salesforce- could you pull data from other sources and write to Salesforce?

A: Yes, absolutely. In the example that I showed, we are reading from Facebook and Salesforce and loading into Salesforce. However, the way that Xplenty works, you can actually build packages that are pulling from any of your sources, including:

  • Amazon Redshift and Google BigQuery
  • Other database source like MySQL, PostgreSQL server, Oracle database
  • Places like Bing Ads, Google Adwords and Google Analytics.

The possibilities really are endless as far as how you decide to mix and match your sources, your destinations and what kinds of transformations you build in between.

We also have a REST API component, which means that we can connect to any service that has a RESTful API or even a SOAP API. Then, once you have data from those sources loaded into a package, you have the whole playground of Xplenty to use to transform your data and load it into Salesforce or any of the other destinations that we support.

I encourage you to schedule time to discuss your specific use cases and map out what the pipeline would look like.

Facebook Ads Fields

Q: The dimension fields for Facebook Ad campaigns are somewhat limited. Do you have plans on adding all attributes associated with these dimensions?

A: Definitely. As is, there are over 1200 fields here, so we believe that we have done a pretty extensive job of trying to collect every single metric that’s available. That said, it might be the case that we somehow missed a couple of them. If you have specific fields that you find are not available that you’d like to have, reach out to identify what those are and we’ll definitely add them into this list.

Q: How do we find out more about which fields are available from Facebook?

A: There are a couple of methods here that we’ll run through.

  • If you are familiar with the Facebook user interface, you can go into the user interface, pull your reports and build reports with all the fields of interest. When you have that report ready, identify what fields you would like, come into Xplenty and hopefully you will find those exact same fields in this list. Now, it might be the case that you find that some of these fields are displaying a little bit differently in the Facebook user interface versus what you see in the Facebook source component in Xplenty. In these cases, if you don’t see exactly the same name, I suggest that you search for some of the same keywords.
  • When using Xplenty, you can always contact live support in the bottom right corner of the window and ask us for help. We’ll be more than happy to help you find the fields that you’re looking for.
  • If you’re inclined, you could always check out the Facebook Ads API itself here. This is exactly the same API that we build this component against, so essentially any field that you see there, you would see in Xplenty and vice versa. That said, this is by no means necessary. I would recommend that you go into live support first and just ask us for help if you prefer.

Q: Are there Facebook API throttling limits? Do they throttle the requests that we are making? Are we going to hit rate limits when we request the data?

A: This was a big issue that many of our users struggled with before we released this integration because Facebook tends to rate limit very quickly. However, with the new integration this is no longer an issue.

The way that we built this source component is against a different flavor of Facebook’s API - called the asynchronous API - which essentially means is that rate limiting is no longer a problem.

That being said, a lot of times you will get better performance if you set it to a max of 1 month at a time simply because Facebook’s API does get bogged down. However, you don’t have to worry about the same data limiting that you had before, not even close.

Pulling Data to Other Sources

Q: Can Xplenty take Facebook or Adwords campaign performance data and put it back to BigQuery or a Google Sheet?

A: Absolutely. Let’s look first at Facebook Ads and Google Adwords. Each one has a native source component, so in either case, you simply set up those source components, build up whatever transformations you want in between - maybe you join the datasets together, maybe you have to do some conversions to dates so they align with each other, etc - and choose your destination.

BigQuery, in particular, is a native destination that we have built into Xplenty so you can just choose BigQuery, configure your table to make sure that the fields you are interested in are set up how you’d like, and then you run the job.

In the case of Google Sheets, we don’t have a native destination setup. This does not mean that the process is any more difficult or that you have to write code - it simply means you would have to use the REST API of Google Sheets to write data into the destination.

Working With Other Integrations

Q: How about MailChimp or Emarsys or DoubleClick to BigQuery?

A: In each case - MailChimp, Emarsys and DoubleClick - you can use that REST API source component. We have customers doing it today so we are very familiar with each of those integrations. And to the destination of either BigQuery or Google Sheets it’s the same answer as before - BigQuery you just set up as that native destination and Google Sheets you write a REST API destination.

Q: Do you support the generation of API code for Google Sheets?

A: Yes, we will help you set this up and make sure that you’re successful and that the data actually shows up the way you want it to. We understand that, as a customer, you want your data delivered, you want it to show up where you want it and you don’t really want to struggle with the ETL part - that’s why you’re coming to us for help. So we will always help you get your system set up and working properly.
