How to Prepare IBM SoftLayer Data for Analysis

How to Prepare IBM SoftLayer Data for Analysis

IBM formed its cloud division when it bought SoftLayer in 2013. One of the services that it provides is cloud-based storage, just like Amazon S3 and Rackspace. You can use it to store gigabytes or even terabytes of data, but at some point, you will need to analyze that data.

That’s where Xplenty comes in. Xplenty lets you prepare data for analysis in the browser. It can import data from your SoftLayer account and also save the results there. You can also use Xplenty to integrate data from several sources, including cloud storage services, relational databases and MongoDB.

Connecting Xplenty to IBM SoftLayer

  1. Get the username and API key from SoftLayer. For instructions, please see SoftLayer's Introduction to Object Storage.

  2. Log in to Xplenty.

  3. Click the avatar icon on the top right and then “Manage Connections”.

  4. Click “new connection” and then “SoftLayer Object Storage”:

    new connection

  5. Fill in the connection details and click “test connection” to make sure that it works. If it doesn’t, double check that everything has been filled in correctly. Then click “create softlayer object storage connection”:

    new softlayer connection

Loading Data from IBM SoftLayer

  1. Create a new Xplenty package or load an existing one.

  2. Click “new source” at the top and select “Cloud Storage”.

  3. Edit the component that was just created by clicking it. Select the cloud storage connection and fill in the rest of the fields:

    cloud storage source

  4. Click the green auto-detect schema button on the top right. If it fails, then one of the fields or the connection hasn’t been filled in correctly.

  5. Click “okay” to save the settings.

Saving Data to IBM SoftLayer

  1. Click the big plus button under the last component and select “cloud storage destination”.

  2. Edit the component. Select the cloud storage connection (possibly a different one than before) and fill in the rest of the fields:

    cloud storage destination

  3. Click “okay” to save the settings.

Summary

Xplenty can easily load data from IBM SoftLayer, integrate it with other sources, prepare it for analysis and even store the results back to SoftLayer or anywhere else.
